I’m honoured to share that What Lives in the Pot has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 Brisbane Rotary Art Show.

Created with mineral pigments, ink, gold leaf and silver leaf on washi paper, this work continues my exploration of memory, landscape and quiet contemplation through the motif of the vessel.

In Nihonga, white is traditionally made from seashells.

This white pigment, called gofun, is made from oyster, clam and scallop shells that have been finely ground into powder.

Today, ready-made versions are available, but I still enjoy preparing traditional shell gofun by hand.

One of the reasons is its unique quality. Rather than covering a surface completely, it can be layered softly, like a veil of mist, creating the quiet luminosity that is characteristic of Nihonga.

I realised today how many Brisbane memories have found their way into these vessels.

Story Bridge, New Farm Park, Paddington, City Hall, Queens Wharf…

Each one holds a different place, a different moment.

Seeing them together feels a little like looking through a visual diary of the city I now call home.
